About Piura

Piura is a department located in northwest Peru and offers a variety of geographic areas to the visitor. From tropical beaches in front to the Pacific Ocean to the Andean mountains as Huaringas in Huancabamba, the vast desert of Sechura and equatorial dry forests.

 

Ancient pre-Columbian cultures lived here as Vicus, Tallan and then the sequences of the Moche, Chimú and the Incas, who bequeathed important archaeological sites.

Piura City

Known as the city of hospitality or the city of eternal sunshine. It was the first city founded by the Spanish in Peru in Tangarará (1532), then transferred to Paita which was plundered by pirates (1577) and then moved to its present location (1587) on the banks of the Piura River inhabited area in which the Tallan. In its historical center is located some churches and colonial houses, highlighting its cathedral and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, and small museums like the Museum Gold of Vicus and the House Museum of Admiral Grau, all within walking distance from their main square and their effigy of La Pola. Around Piura

Located 60 Km (37 miles) east of the city of Piura (45 minutes by car), in the foothills of the Andes, in extensive tropical dry forests and large areas of cultivation of mango and lemon. Chulucanas and La Encantada village are known for their pottery and the quality of their clay. Heirs of the pre-Inca tradition, keep ocher, green, yellow and black. The latter is achieved through the use of burnt mango leaf through a process called "humeado." Chulucanas artisans reflected in its decorative globular pottery customs and traditions of his people, subjects initiated by Max Inga and his disciples as Teodoro Yamunaqué.

 

Northern beaches

Located 187 Km (116 miles) north of the city of Piura (2 hours by car), the 1,164 kilometer of the North Pan-American Highway, 106 kilometers from the city of Tumbes.
