Catacaos

 

This picturesque village is located 12 km from the city of Piura, its ancestors is the Pre-Hispanic culture of Tallan, famous for its artisans and gastronomy.

 

Etymologically speaking the word derives from the Moche voices "catac" (grain) and "caos" (lush). This area was populated by Tallan culture, who will then be installed and run by Nariwalac Mecnau and then organized themselves and formed the Tallan nation.

 

It has a population of 65000 inhabitants mostly engaged in agriculture and is characterized by the production of cotton, high quality texture and long fibers, is extremely quoted both at home and abroad.

 

Catacaos something is very characteristic of the innate ability to do wonderful artisans of gold and silver, as well as straw, wood, leather, clay. The quality of many of its products and art works have managed to cross borders and are exported to various countries.

 

Getting to this city is quite easy, you can take one of the many vehicles that make passenger service between the cities of Piura and Catacaos, after a journey of about 15 minutes for a flat and green countryside and enter to the village.

 

With more than 170 years behind Catacaos presents to all tourist its historic and beautiful Commerce Street, the main artery that are older than two centuries has received thousands of merchants who have sold their products mainly of straw and reeds.

 

Highlights include the celebration of the holiday Bajada de Reyes (6 January), Easter and the celebration of its anniversary every June 21.

 

Catacaos Crafts
Crafts of this town is recognized nationally and internationally, to the extent that the State has awarded the title of "Artisan Capital" with a law 25132 in 1989. Their craftsmen have great ability to make gold and silver jewelry in filigree (fine wire), which artistically adorn necklaces and rings, and draws up all kinds of object that is requested. They also emphasize its straw weaving scarf, famous for its quality, finesse and delicacy, for its craftsmanship in hardwood (hualtaco), astounding in its beauty, perfection and design.

 

All local work is exhibited at the Comercio Street, historic main street, dating back two centuries has received thousands of merchants who have traded their products. Gastronomy

Catacaos is known for its cuisine and picanterías (taverns - local restaurants), which are points required of all visitors and local people. Catacaos is also the land of chicherías, whose gates are raised white flags announcing the fresh chicha (beer), sparkling and generous.

 

Prominent among its most famous dishes:

  • The ceviche, raw fish marinated in sour lemon, onion, salt and hot pepper, and can be grouper, grouper or cashmere, accompanied by a good 'trama' (sweet potato, cassava or trifles).

  • The last fish salpreso (previously salted with a day earlier) passed through hot water, using the mero fish, cabrillón fish, peje fish, ojo de uva fish, served with an onion sarsa coriander and pepper sprinkled on top and served with soft rice and boiled sweet potato.

  • The malarrabia (dish made with boiled banana and cooked in water, accompanied by cheese and olives).

  • The "wedding soup" traditional dish served at every wedding or big party of the people: this dish is made with soaked bread, noodles (which are made to cook and dry raisins are added), served with white rice and beef stew, and decorated with a rehash, olives and egg.

  • And of course the famous "chicha", a fermented drink a special type of corn (yellow disk), which germinates, then dried and ground, is prepared according to ancient techniques: the corn is boiled in pots clay, the obtained solution is poured into "pots" and "coppers" then "chews", this process is called "cool", then left to ferment until the point acid, separating the clarified liquid in clarito and jora which are subjected to a second cooking in clay pots, then comes the cernido which is the separation of solids from the corn is then packed in jars of clay, for fermentation in the Catacaos warm sands. The manufacturing process takes approximately 96 hours. For sale is sold in jars of clay and potos or cojuditos.

 

Simbilá

Located on the same road from Piura to Catacaos, five minutes before reaching Catacaos land known for their pottery jars, pots and jars, which astonish and curious students to check how the craftsman, using as tools working two paddles, a water-tank, a river stone, a painting and sealing, sitting or kneeling on the floor manually produced countless items of varying aesthetics.

 

Narihualá Archaeological Complex

From the town of Catacaos are traversed 3 km to the archaeological site (5 minutes by car). Visiting hours: Mon 8:00 to 18:00. Considered the capital of a local pre-Inca culture called Tallan. The buildings are made ​​of adobe platforms with mud mortar organized into four sectors. Site Museum. The total area is 6 acres.

 

In Narihualá village are great weavers of hats and is recommended to visit their home-workshops.
