Protected Natural Areas in Lima

Reserva Nacional Lachay (Lachay National Reserve)

Location: Lima, province of Huaura.
Area: 5,070 hectares. (150 - 750 masl)
Creation: June 1977

Conservation unit, on an area of coastal desert, protection of the fauna and flora characteristic of this area. Oasis in the desert, forming an ecosystem feed by the humidity generated by the drizzle (fog) coming from the sea. During September and October all the hills are covered of intense greenery, diminishing during the rest of the year, until being completely dry in the months of summer. Animal species as foxes of the desert, deer, bats, and great quantity of species of birds inhabit this ecosystem; endemic birds to Peru.

 

The ecosystem of the hills of Lachay, is a phenomenon, oasis in high parts of the desert which vegetation feeds of the humidity of the fog, for its proximity to the sea. Many hills exist in the central and south area of the Peruvian coast.

 

Lachay is located at 105 km (65 miles) north of Lima, the best time for its visit is between the months of September and October. Exist places enabled for camping.


Refugio de Vida Silvestre Pantanos de Villa (Swamps of Villa Refuge of Wildlife)

Location: Lima city, district of Chorrillos.
Area: 263 hectares. (-1 - 5 masl)
Creation: September 2006

Unit of conservation of the ecological systems of the marshy area of Chorrillos, intangible area for the protection of diverse species of migratory birds that use this area like point of rest, and also fauna and flora species characteristic of this ecosystem. Inside the reservation are located towers for the observation of the birds and the habitat in general. The Swamps of Villa are located at 20 km south of Lima city.

This reservation is being threatened by the urban and industrial growth in its contour.

 

Zona Reservada Humedales de Puerto Viejo (Swamps of Puerto Viejo Reserved Zone)

Location: Lima city, district of Chilca.
Area: 275 hectares. (0 - 10 masl)
Creation: January 2008

Unit of conservation of the ecological systems of the marshy area of Chilca, intangible area for the protection of diverse species of migratory birds that use this area like point of rest, and also fauna and flora species characteristic of this ecosystem. The Swamps of Puerto Viejo are located at 68 km south of Lima city.

 

Reserva Paisajística Nor Yauyos Cochas (The Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve)

Location: Lima and Junín Departments
Area: 221,268 hectares. (2500 - 5750 masl)
Creation: May 2001

Conservation upper basin of the Cañete and Pachacayo Rivers Basin, hosting ecosystems and landscapes of great beauty and uniqueness. Is a protected area located in Andean zone of Department of Lima and Junin. The access is by Lunahuana (south of Lima City) or Huancayo in Junin. Huancaya is the place with the most beautiful landscapes, lagoons, waterfalls, and the waters of the Cañete River has amazing colors and are very transparent. Fishing of trout. This area also houses the flora and fauna typical of the Andes distributed among great mountains, rivers, lakes and archaeological sites.
