How to arrive to Lima City

Lima, Peru's capital, has the best airport and seaport in Peru. Lima is the main hub for international and domestic flights, as well as highways. It's recommended to use Lima as your entry city when flying to Peru. Also, Lima is the main hub for terrestrial communication for all main cities in Peru.

Travel from / to Lima by air (international flights)

International airlines operate scheduled flights to Peru's Jorge Chávez International Airport (Airport Code LIM), located in Lima - Peru.

• From New York - Newark, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Mexico, Cancun and Toronto exist direct flights to Lima.
• From Europe exist direct flights to Lima from Madrid, Paris and Amsterdam.
• Peru has direct flights from the main cities in Latin America as Bogota, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Guayaquil, La Habana, La Paz, Mexico, Panama, Quito, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Sao Paulo, San Jose de Costa Rica, Santo Domingo.

International Airport Jorge Chávez in Lima is the main gate for international flights and it's the main hub to local flights connections. It's 30 / 45 minutes away from the city (San Isidro or Miraflores). The airport is opened to all people the 24 hours and its security is too much controlled; there is an hotel inside to the airport. The usual airport facilities are available as banks, snack bars, restaurants, Internet and Wi-Fi, stores, left-luggage rooms, public telephones for local and internatinal calls, post office, tourist information office, etc.

Travel from / to Lima by air (domestic flights)

If you have only a short time for visit Peru, the best way to travel is by air. The Lima's International Airport Jorge Chávez is the main hub to local flights connections. There are regular daily flights from Lima to Cuzco, Arequipa, Juliaca (Lake Titicaca and Puno), Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado (Tambopata), Tumbes, Piura, Chiclayo, Trujillo, Tarapoto, and another cities.

A rental light planes service also exist, and air companies for non regular flights.

Traveling by Bus from / to Lima - Terrestrial Transportation

Its the best way to view the beautiful landscapes of Peru, if you have enough time. Use your own car, a rented one or tourist buses.

Pan-American Highway: Completely asphalt, with some sectors build as highway. From Lima to Tumbes (1,310 Km. / 808 miles) and to the Ecuador border (1,335 Km. / 830 miles), its called North Pan-American (see distance chart). From Lima to Tacna (1,348 Km. / 838 miles) and the Chile border, its called South Pan-American (see distance chart).

"Carretera Central" (Central Highway): Road that runs from Lima to the east. It connects the main cities in the Central Andes as Tarma, Huancayo, Huánuco, etc. This roads also connects to the main cities in the high jungle in the north as Tarapoto and Pucallpa (see distance chart).

Railroads

The Central Railroad, in standard-width lines, connects Lima with the Central Andes. The train is mainly dedicated to mineral transport to Lima. Every Sunday, eventually, a tourist train departs from Lima to La Oroya - Huancayo (299 Km. / 186 miles). Its way, with beautiful Andean landscapes and deep canyons, is an unforgettable experience. The train crosses Ticlio (4,818 m. above sea level. / 15 807 feet), the highest railroad point in the world. From Huancayo, there are daily departures to Huancavelica (146 Km. / 91 mills).

Maritime Transportation

El Callao, the main sea harbor in Peru. Some shipping lines offer regular sailings from USA or Europe to Callao.

Taxis

Taxis use no taximeters in Peru. You should ask for the fare before taking the service. Using established taxi companies is highly recommended; you can get a taxi with a phone call. Using taxis, other than the yellow ones, is not recommended. No tipping is advised. Taxi fares in the city are between S/. 5 and S/. 20; to the airport, between US $ 20 andUS $ 50.
